Book 6: Grandpa, Tell Us About the Good Old Days: The Cucumber Patch / Cat Pants

The Cucumber Patch! Our family worked hard growing cucumbers for a pickle factory, hoping to earn extra money. When disease ruined the crop, our dreams of a small fortune disappeared. I reluctantly gave my hard earned ten dollars to Mom for groceries, learning a lifelong lesson about sacrifice, hard work and helping family. Cat Pants! When I refused to attend school because of holes in my pants, Mother lovingly  patched them with little cat faces. Proud at first, I soon became embarrassed when my classmates  teased me. I secretly buried the pants in the woods, never forgetting the lesson about a mother’s  love, creativity, and making do with what little we had.
